Shop Sells Bikes and Bowls of Acai

Google “Lake Havasu + Acai Bowl” and guess what comes up first? A bicycle store. But wait, what’s an acai bowl?

Owners of River Cyclery & Sport report they’re attracting visitors to their store through online searches that are not necessarily for new bikes, tires or apparel. Visitors are coming in for acai bowls served by their in-house juice café, the locally owned and operated River Juice and Java.

Sure you can walk in and buy or rent bikes. You’ll be surrounded by bikes valued at upwards of $11,000. There are mountain and road bikes, comfort bikes (a relatively new category for exercise and fun riding), beach cruisers, and BMX bikes perfect for the local Tinnell Memorial Sports Park, the largest multiuse skate park in the Southwest. River Cyclery sells and services them all, according to owner Tony Beck, a mountain bike racer.

But you’re going to need some energy for all that riding and that’s where River Juice and Java comes in. You can order special drink blends for performance, energy and refreshment. You can buy performance shakes, java drinks and smoothies. Then there are the acai bowls (pronounced AH-SY-EE), which have a loyal following. WebMD.com says this fruit of the acai palm is a superfood with anti-aging and weight loss properties.

The acai berry has been heralded for an array of health benefits, but its strongest asset is definitely its taste. Acai bowls look like ice cream, almost taste like ice cream, and are basically a really thick smoothie that’s been topped with oatmeal, fruit or peanut butter. Then you wolf it down with a spoon. It’s made with a variety of additional berries, tropical fruits of your choice (mango, pineapple, bananas), and lots of toppings.

After eating a bowl, you will not only feel happily full (for hours) and have satisfied a sweet craving (no need to cave for a donut), you’ll have also done something that was good for you.

Ronda Skirvin, manager, says, “Lake Havasu City has plenty of fast food options, but you can also eat pretty healthy in this town.”

Cost is $6.95. Just honk the bicycle horn for service and consume some delicious energy to fuel your day cycling around town.
